Why is fibre so powerful?
Fibre is a type of carbohydrate, but unlike sugars and starches, the body cannot break it down into glucose. Instead, it travels all the way to the large intestine largely unchanged.
This is remarkably unusual. Most nutrients are digested and absorbed long before they reach the colon. Fibre is one of the very few that makes the entire journey intact — and that is precisely where the magic happens.
Your gut microbiome contains trillions of microbes carrying tens of thousands of specialised enzymes that humans simply do not possess. These microbes are uniquely equipped to digest and ferment different types of fibre.
